Another Death Threat from the Aguilas Negras in Colombia
This recent death threat by the Colombian paramilitary death squad Aguilas Negras may be quite shocking for Americans, but it represents a chilling everyday reality for many Colombian labor leaders and human rights activists. Where is the outrage in the American press over the fact that the United States government has funded and continues to fund the militarization of this country through Plan Colombia? Why are major newspapers across the United States now adding insult to injury by editorializing in favor of President Uribe and a pending investor rights agreement that will lock in the existing conditions of state supported violence and terror?
US Congressional members ought to take note of the language that the authors of these types of death threats use. The vigilantes presume to be acting in defense of the policies of Uribe, as when they insist that those who oppose "the policies of our president ... will be executed". President Uribe has been denounced numerous times for labeling people who oppose his agenda as FARC guerrilla members. This false accusation immediately puts labor leaders and human rights activists in danger of their lives because it serves as a green light to paramilitary death squads to commit their atrocious crimes. Furthermore, President Uribe himself is deeply implicated in the paramilitary scandal: many of his closest political friends and allies in the government are either in jail or under investigation for their ties to these death squads.
On May 1, 2008, the following death threat was found at the home of José Domingo Flórez, a Coca Cola bottling plant employee and Sinaltrainal union leader:

THAT THE FARC GUERRILLA MEMBERS JOSE DOMINGO FLOREZ AND LUIS EDUARDO GARCIA, CAMOUFLAGED IN THE TERRORIST UNION SINALTRAINAL, WHO ARE AGAINST THE FTA AND THE POLICIES OF OUR PRESIDENT ALVARO URIBE VELEZ, WILL BE EXECUTED IF THEY CONTINUE TO OPPOSE THESE POLICIES. WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEM IN OUR REGION. THE POLICIES OF OUR PRESIDENT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED --IF NECESSARY, OVER THE SPILLED BLOOD OF THEIR FAMILIES, AND SINCE HE HAS NOT LEARNED THE LESSON FROM WHAT HAPPENED TO JOSE DOMINGO'S BASTARD SON, ANDRES DAMIAN FLOREZ, HE SHOULD BE CAREFUL BECAUSE WE BROKE THAT SOB, WE BEAT THE HELL OUT OF HIM.
